Sued To Tax Incomes

The Florida Supreme Court ruled Thursday against Lake County Property Appraiser Ed Havill in a landmark case that could have brought hundreds of thousands of dollars in extra property tax revenue to the county. Havill, who began his battle with Scripps Howard Cable Co. in 1989, appraised the company based on its income. The cable company said Havill's method of figuring the tax bill is tantamount to an income tax, which is prohibited under Florida law. -Orlando Sentinel, 4/24/98
